Our story

How a word from God became a mission to end period poverty.

How it started

Knickers to Poverty was founded by Anna Saunders after she received a word from God. She took that word seriously, and it led her to the women and girls of Uganda.

Since then, Anna and a growing team of friends, sewers and supporters have been collecting knickers and bras, making reusable pads, and taking them to rural communities across East Africa.

Why “Knickers to Poverty”?

In Britain, saying “knickers to that!” means “no more of that, thanks!” That’s exactly how we feel about poverty. We want to give it the boot.

And, quite literally, we do it by getting knickers to the women who need them.

What we believe

Every woman and girl deserves to manage her period with dignity, stay in school, and have the skills to provide for herself.

Rooted in faith

Our work grows out of our Christian faith and the belief that small, practical gifts given with love can change lives.

Sustainable by design

Reusable products and sewing skills mean the help keeps going long after we’ve left.

Be part of the story

There are lots of ways to help, from a pack of knickers to an afternoon at the sewing machine.
